 The Yavapai Nation: “People of the Red Mountain”
The Yavapai Nation is a 950 member Native American Tribe with 600 members actually living in its Arizona Indian Reservation. The Yavapai now own 24,000 acres in Northeast Maricopa County just 35 miles from Phoenix.
The Yavapai Nation is just a fraction of Yuman-speaking tribes which consist of the Haulapai, Hauasupai, Kumeyaay, Pai Pai, Cocopan, and other Southwestern groups. Yet the Yavapai have successfully been able to distinguish itself from these other groups by taking pride in its community and establishing a strong, stable economy for its people.
The Yavapai Nation was once a group of people who hunted and gathered food in an extensive area in Arizona’s mountainous Mogollan Rim Country and desert lowlands. While living in their Arizona Indian Reservation, the Yavapai have focused their efforts on creatively pursuing business opportunities that will encourage self-sufficiency and assure a legacy.
The Yavapai Nation is dedicated to keeping its culture alive through the spreading of time-honored stories, arts, and traditions further than its Arizona Indian Reservation boundaries. Yavapai share with the outside world what they can, and keep what is considered most sacred to themselves.
